Gramya Manthan – Winter edition applications invited

Gramya Manthan is a 10-day rural immersion journey with 30 passionate change agents to remote villages of our country. The 8th edition of the program will be happening in villages near Kutch, Gujarat from 22nd – 31st December 2017 hosted by Youth Alliance and is in collaboration with Sabarmati Ashram Trust and ESI, Sughad.

The program aims at developing a deeper awareness of ourselves and the world around us by following our curiosity and discovering new understanding by creating a space to learn, to observe and engage with the diverse realities of our world.

The idea is also to bring ourselves into a rhythm with the surprisingly complex realities and wisdom of rural life, allowing ourselves a platform to begin to think more holistically and to challenge our preconceived notions about Indian rural communities.

Process of Gramya Manthan

Gramya Manthan is rooted in the timeless principles of the circle.

The facilitators co-create a space for each participant to express her/his unique self as we learn together. Learning happens in three ways:

•   We learn from each other
•   We learn with each other
•   We learn from our own self in the company of each other

Pinkathon is India’s Biggest Women’s run founded by Milind Soman, created with the objective of spreading awareness about women’s health related issues, breast cancer in particular. Chennai will see this exclusive grand marathon on July 2, 2017.

Nishchint – Services for the elderly in Mumbai

Nishchint’s area of work is the lonely elderly of Mumbai. These are typically financially independent elders who stay alone or with their equally old spouse, who’s children have moved overseas and settled there, or basically live away from them for whatever reason. Due to physical deterioration and lack of confidence, the elderly’s lifestyle has changed by being restricted to their house. They are reasonably well-off and can afford maids who technically do everything a maid would. But the place of a daughter or son in their life is missing. We try and fill that gap.

Volunteering for Nishchint
We have adopted about 13-14 elderly within and outside Mumbai (not-financially) and engage with them to alleviate their loneliness through love care and companionship. Trying to get them back to their hobbies, improving their social participation, help them with banking, any health issues, issues related to mobility, etc.

We would like to expand a bit now create a team of volunteers who can reach more lonely elderly in the city and provide them with this kind of warmth, love and care and attend to any exigencies in their life. We need the help of volunteers who can adopt some couples and make their life enjoyable.

Each Volunteer / set of volunteers will be be adopting one more elderly couples and conduct the following for the adopted elderly:

1. Visit them once a forthnight and call twice a week for casual conversations and chit chat.
2. Get them back to their hobbies.
3. Take them out once in a month , say for movies, plays, music concerts, dinners or to their relatives place. Basically get them to start socialising again.
4. Take them for regular walks whenever the volunteer visits the elderly
5. Assist them with technology like whatsapp, emails, skype with their children.
6. In case of any health issues, take them to the doctor / hospital.

FREQUENCY OF ACTIVITY

  • Briefing and short training before adoption will be given
  • Location will be at the elderly’s home
  • Visit elderly’s house once once a fortnight
  • Telephone calls once a week
  • Organising a social activity for them once a month

EXPECTATION FROM THE VOLUNTEER

  • Caring, loving and compassionate people
  • Open, extrovert personality, ability to bond quickly and gain trust.
  • Patience In dealing with the elderly
  • About 7 hours in a month (excluding travel time if any)
  • Gaining trust and bonding with elderly people takes time, hence willingness to commit for a minimum of 6 months.
