Volunteer with Mentor Together

Mentor Together is looking for committed volunteer mentors for their life-skills mentoring program in Gurgaon, Pune and Delhi.

Details of the life-skills mentoring program: In our life skills mentoring program, children facing conditions of high risk are identified in Government or Municipal high schools. These conditions of higher risk include:

  • Coming from a single parent home
  • Facing family problems like regular fights & quarrels or drinking or addictions
  • Facing challenging economic conditions at home, worse than peers

Our research shows that all these conditions can lead to adverse outcomes like drop-out from school, early entry into the workforce and early marriage. Children facing such conditions are rarely supported in group environments like the classroom. 1-1 mentorship through MT’s program team and a volunteer mentor can be important to help a child counter these challenges that they face.

The children receive a mentor from the middle of Grade 8 to the end of Grade 9. In Grade 10 mentees receive an academic and career planning module directly from Mentor Together through workshops. Our end goal is to help these children gain the life skills and support that they need to make a successful transition from high school.

  1. Mentors will have to travel to mentee locations for the 1-1 meetings. Across the 3 cities, the mentee locations are:
    • Gurgaon: Sector 45. Students go to a low-income private school called Rao Ram Singh Public School.
    • Pune: Hadapsar, Ramwadi, Wadgaonsheri and Pimple Gaurav and students go to government schools in these neighbourhoods
    • Delhi: Madavali (Near Talaab Park) and West Vinod Nagar, Patparganj. Students are from government schools.
  2. Mentors need to meet with mentees at least 2 times in a month supporting them for a total of 4 hours per month for a total of 1 year. Most meetings happen on weekends and the meeting time slots are decided mutually by each mentor-mentee pair.
  3. Mentors receive training and curriculum, to help them through mentoring.

The DaanUtsav Internship

The 2018  DaanUtsav Internship programme is an opportunity for young professionals to create significant social change.

About DaanUtsav

DaanUtsav, earlier called Joy of Giving Week (JGW), is India’s very own festival of giving. It aims to spread love, joy and happiness among those who are less fortunate than us, and for each one of us to experience the joy in giving. DaanUtsav is celebrated for a week starting Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2-8) every year, and was launched in 2009.

From celebrities and CEOs, to auto drivers and maids, school and college students to village communities, millions of people participate in the festival ever year in various ways- from organizing large fundraisers that raise lacs and crores, to reading out stories to children, making and distributing sandwiches on the street, to organizing donation, collection and volunteering drives, the festival sees participation from hundreds of corporates, schools, colleges, NGOs, apartments, villages and community groups across India.

Each coordinator is committed to spending at least 10-20 hours a month in mentoring the Interns, helping them reflect, learn and grow, and pick up soft and hard skills to work effectively and achieve goals. Coordinators will provide significant initial guidance and training, followed by daily support and monitoring to the Intern throughout the duration of the Internship.
  • Interns get to interact with a wide range of business leaders and executives, social entrepreneurs and NGOs, school and college leaders, government administrators and community leaders. This kind of exposure is rarely available in any other opportunity, and will help Interns create phenomenal relationships and networks across their city.
  • Interns work closely with passionate volunteers in their own city
  • Interns build strong communication, presentation and persuasion skills, self- confidence, positive values and beliefs, greater compassion and caring, a deeper understanding of India’s social issues and challenges as well as possible solutions to them.
  • Interns receive a certificate on successful completion of the Internship Programme from the host organisation.

Gramya Manthan is a 10-day rural immersion journey with 30 passionate change agents to remote villages of our country. The 8th edition of the program will be happening in villages near Kutch, Gujarat from 22nd – 31st December 2017 hosted by Youth Alliance and is in collaboration with Sabarmati Ashram Trust and ESI, Sughad.

The program aims at developing a deeper awareness of ourselves and the world around us by following our curiosity and discovering new understanding by creating a space to learn, to observe and engage with the diverse realities of our world.

The idea is also to bring ourselves into a rhythm with the surprisingly complex realities and wisdom of rural life, allowing ourselves a platform to begin to think more holistically and to challenge our preconceived notions about Indian rural communities.

Process of Gramya Manthan
