The Teacher Foundation, Bangalore and supported by Wipro Applying Thought in Schools (WATIS), Bangalore has taken up a nation-wide research on Developing Standards for Social & Emotional Learning (SSEL) in Indian schools.

The research aims to develop standards for Social and Emotional Learning for Indian Children. As we know, academics has been the focus of school education for the longest time and there are clearly cut standards for Math, English, Science etc. that guide teachers in developing students’ skills in each of these subjects. However, affective domain, which comprises of the social and emotional skills, has been found to be just as important for the overall development and well-being of the students. This being a very grey area, there has not not been enough effort towards developing standards that can guide the teachers in facilitating students’ development in this area. Countries like the US, UK, Australia, Singapore etc. have already come up with frameworks suitable for their context and children in this area. We, at The Teacher Foundation, in association with WIPRO Applying Though In Schools (WATIS), aim to come up with one such framework based on the needs and observations of the children of our country. For this, we are planning to visit 15 cities from across 5 zones – North, South, East, West and North East of India, including the rural areas. To gather data, we will be administering questionnaires to a specific number of teachers, students and the Principal and conducting a short interview with the Principal.

All data will be treated with utmost confidentiality and schools will be duly acknowledged for their contribution towards the research when it is published. Individuals and organizations who help us in this journey will also be duly acknowledged.
