Project Goodbook – Survey for Volunteers & Donors

We are students of Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology. We are currently developing a platform to help prospective volunteers and donors to explore the myriad of NGOs available in the Indian scene. On that end, we would be grateful, if you could forward the following surveys to people who have either volunteered or donated in the past for their feedback and their experience in exploring various NGOs.

Details of the platform: The platform, currently codenamed ‘Project Goodbook’ will be a social network of sorts for various volunteers and donors to easily explore the various NGOs currently working in the fields of their choices. The platform will allow donors to easily donate and track the receipts of their donations. The volunteers can volunteer for various organized events by the NGOs and the platform will also allow NGOs to find sponsors for their events as commercial organizations can make accounts to sponsor various events. We are currently looking for features to include in our platform so as to make it fruitful for the users of the platform.

Volunteer to teach English | Chennai

Volunteering opportunity: To teach spoken English to underprivileged children and women ( Basic and Advanced ongoing courses of 3 months duration each)

Location: YWCA campus, No 1078 Poonamalee High road, near Thinathandi Office, Chennai- 600084

Days expected to volunteer: Once a week on weekdays

Time: 2  to 4 pm

Period: 3 months

Skills required: Good command over the English Language and ability to work as a team.

Karna Vidya Technology Centre (K.V.T.C.) is an exclusive technology centre for the Visually Impaired requires your support to Volunteer your Vision in helping increase the employability of Visually Challenged youth.

Vision – Empowering Visually Impaired through Employment

KVTC caters to 325 candidates with visual impairment currently and deliver vocational training towards employment of candidates

Volunteer Requirements at KVT

· Need support with Software installation.
· Need Support to demonstrate the software to candidates.
· Need improvement in spoken English.
· Need Support in creating educational materials.
· Need Volunteers to be a part of Employability Training visits – Visit to ATM to understand how it works, Visit to shopping mall – Exposure to mall culture, Visit to Bank – Understand Banking process like cash deposit, ATM card application etc.

To start Volunteering you have to attend one of the general volunteer workshops which consists of
· Grouping of Volunteers.
· Disability Awareness games – to understand disability from the perspective of a person with disability.
· Basic Sign Language and Braille workshop
· How to address a person with disability – Game.

Volunteer for Marina Runnerz Marathon 2016 | Chennai

Volunteers needed for Marina Runners Marathon – 2016. The proceeds from the run will be distributed to Acro Iris Foundation working in the area of education, Sankara Nethralaya and Viswajayam Foundation working for Health

Date : Feb 28, 2016

Time : 4 AM to 9 AM.

Assembly point : YMCA, Nandanam.  After which volunteers will have to move to their allocated locations viz Saidapet, Adyar, Besant nagar and Kotturpuram.

Volunteer have to attend the briefing session on the previous day.

Volunteer for Education Survey | Chennai

Avanti Fellows is a pan India education based NGO working towards proving a platform for highly motivated student from the underprivileged section of the society to help in realizing their dream of scoring good marks and getting into colleges. We have been working in the education field for the past 4 years. Previously we have worked with XI and XII std students in Corporation schools. Currently we are in the process of conducting bridge curriculum for about 1800 students in IX std of Chennai Corporation School.
Work schedule – Four to Five hours in a day
Time – 9.30am – 3.30pm
General Description – We are currently conducting a mid- line survey for our IX std students. This will help us understand their existing grade level in 27 Chennai corporation Schools that are predominantly present in north Chennai zones. We need volunteers who can travel to schools and spend four to five hours a day in conducting survey. The surveyor needs to survey 30 students in a day.

Skills – Able to speak read and understand Tamil.
Qualifications – Any college students or graduates.

Turtle Walks – Animal Welfare | Chennai

Only one in in 4000 Olive Ridley turtles survive to adulthood, you can help save them!

Turtles

Turtles comes to land only when there is no light or human habitat around. They lay around 100 eggs and close it with mud. Unfortunately,dogs and people in coastal area harm the eggs. So volunteers are needed to recover these eggs.

The recovered eggs are protected by several hatcheries working along the coast, after 48 days those eggs turn to hatchlings and swim their way back to ocean with help of star light. They learn the magnetic signature of their birth place during their journey from sand to sea. When these turtles become adults they will return back to the same coast using the magnetic signature they learnt to lay their eggs (Natal homing).

We take a walk seven kilometres from Neelangarai to Besant Nagar beach. We gather at Neelangarai beach at around 10.30 PM. There is a discussion about turtles and other environmental issues and the walk starts after that. The walk may go on until 4am or 5am depending on whether we find any nests, and how many we find.

To get to Neelangarai beach you have to take the turning off ECR next to Shanthi hospital. There is an arch over the road that says Kapaleeswarar Nagar. We suggest that You leave your vehicles (if any) at the Elliots beach, because when the walk ends you are likely to be tired it’s easier to get back home.

Polling Booth Accessibility Survey – Disability | Tamilnadu

In May 2016, over 5.38 crore people in Tamilnadu will be eligible to exercise their franchise to elect a government for the state. Over 70% of us are expected to turn out and vote easily. However, as per WHO, about 10 to 15% of our population have some form of disability. Most people with disabilities face barriers to cast their vote due to inaccessibility of the polling booths.

Join Bhumi, Disability Rights Alliance and other voluntary organizations in conducting polling booth audits to assist the election commission of India in making a survey of all polling booths in Tamilnadu for accessibility.

The audit can be done by anyone who can install an app in an android phone and will take only 10 minutes. You can begin by auditing your own neighborhood school which serves as a polling booth before taking up other areas based on your availability.

Road Safety Awareness, footboard travel – Community | Thozhan | Chennai

On account of 67th Republic day, Thozhan has planned for a massive Public awareness campaign on Footboard travelling across Chennai city at 67 bus stops in Chennai.

Foot board travelling has been an important issue in chennai city and it is one of a major cause for road accidents which endangers the lives of many people. More than 60% of foot board travellers’ are students (College/School) and more importantly, 90% of accidental deaths due to foot boarding are between the ages of 16 to 24.

We are the youngest country in the world and the youngsters are the future of our country. But we are losing such precious lives in micro seconds due to our ignorance.
